Sustainability Starts at Home

Bywaters proudly operates across the whole of the UK, with a specially designed, ‘proximity principle’-inspired operations for sustainable waste management and recycling in London.

Through our ‘London for London’ initiative, Bywaters constantly reduces carbon emissions associated with our waste management services in order to keep London’s air clean. And we devise London-focused environmental solutions such as transporting waste by barge to ease congestion, and installing 4,000 solar panels on the roof of our facility in East London.

In addition to providing sustainable waste management services, we are committed to supporting London charities and driving initiatives to improve the city’s environment. Bywaters is proud to call London our home, and we’re always striving to make the UK’s capital sustainable for future generations.

London for London

The Proximity Principle

‘London for London’ is founded on the proximity principle: a core tenet of waste management that states waste should be disposed of as close to its point of origin as possible. This both reduces pollution and encourages communities to manage their waste sustainably, making it an important part of Bywaters’ ethos.

Many of our valued clients are based in London, from influential businesses to some of the city’s (and indeed the world’s) greatest landmarks. In line with the proximity principle, we process and recycle all waste from our London customers within the city limits.

Bywaters has been operating in East London for more than 60 years, and over this time we have gained the trust of some of the capital’s most recognisable buildings and organisations. Here’s a small selection of the types of businesses we serve and our valued clients:

Our London-Focused Initiatives

Bywaters raises awareness of environmental issues all around the UK – such as through our successful ‘Plasticus’ campaign – and we use our London resources to have as positive an impact as possible on the city. Examples of our work include:

Bywaters holds frequent beach cleans around London and the South East in collaboration with our clients. These events are fantastic ways to educate people about the importance of sustainable waste management – especially in relation to the global problem of ocean plastic pollution – while at the same time cleaning up the banks of the Thames and the UK shoreline.

Our state-of-the art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Bow is one of the most advanced of its kind. To demonstrate how sustainable recycling and waste management companies operate, Bywaters holds regular tours of the facility, for everyone from clients to schoolchildren, and even Members of Parliament.

The most effective way to increase London’s sustainability is to educate people about how to dispose of waste responsibly. Our Green Gurus do this for our clients through waste awareness days and bespoke training, and Bywaters also sends staff to schools in London in order to teach the next generation about how to take care of their city.
