The climate crisis is accelerating. With 2024 confirmed as the hottest year on record and global temperatures above pre-industrial levels, the time for decisive action is now.

Our Net Zero journey at Bywaters began in 2014. We define Net Zero as eliminating all technically and economically feasible emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3) and then neutralising the remainder through robust offsetting.

Our Progress So Far

Despite the complexity of the UK’s emissions landscape, where the waste sector’s true environmental impact is much higher than reported figures suggest, we have worked consistently to reduce our footprint.

Over the past eight years, we have successfully more than halved our total carbon output.

This rapid reduction is the result of concrete investments and operational shifts:

  • Green Power: Installation of 4,000 solar panels on our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), generating up to 700MWh annually.
  • Sustainable Fleet: A £7 million investment in a highly efficient Euro-6 fleet alongside the introduction of fully electric staff fleet.
  • Efficiency & Conservation: Implementing LED lighting replacements for estimated annual savings of 31,053 kWh, and installing a 10,000 litre rainwater harvesting tank.
  • Transparency: Achieving rigorous standards like ISO 50001 and aligning our accounting with ISO 14064. Our BRAD portal also allows clients to see their Scope 3 emissions in real-time.

We remain dedicated to full transparency and continuous improvement as we work toward a truly Net Zero future.
