The ocean is our planet’s largest ecosystem, acting as a crucial life support system that regulates our climate, generates over half of our oxygen and sustains global biodiversity. As we approach World Ocean Day on Monday 8 June 2026, the global movement is focusing on accountability under this year’s definitive Action Theme: Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet.

At Bywaters, we recognise that what happens on land in London directly impacts the health of the global marine environment. Protecting the ocean requires a unified effort, from international treaties down to the daily waste choices made by businesses in the capital.

The Road to 2030: The High Seas Treaty in Force

The global environmental community has long championed the “30×30” initiative, a critical goal to protect at least 30 per cent of the world’s lands and oceans by 2030. Currently, less than 8 per cent of the global ocean is under formal protection, making this timeline an absolute priority for climate stability.

The year 2026 marks a historic turning point. Following years of intense negotiation, the landmark High Seas Treaty officially entered into force on 17 January 2026 after securing its required 60 national ratifications.

This legally binding treaty covers the High Seas, an area encompassing two-thirds of the ocean. However, international agreements are only the first step. National leaders must now follow through by establishing strongly regulated Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to restore fragile ecosystems and build climate resilience.

Intercepting Plastic at the Source

Leading scientists emphasise that a healthy ocean is a fundamental tool for stabilising our climate. Yet, these protected waters face severe threats from land-based activities. Commercial waste, particularly single-use plastic, travels down urban waterways and enters the marine environment, accumulating rapidly in newly designated protected zones.

Bywaters is deeply committed to intercepting commercial waste before it can escape into natural ecosystems. At our solar-powered facilities, we utilise advanced systems to precisely identify and recover recyclable materials. Keeping plastics within a closed-loop system directly reduces the volume of land-based pollution destined for the ocean.

Waste Audits

Action Steps for London Businesses

The responsibility to protect our blue planet is universal. London businesses can actively support the 30×30 goal by reducing their environmental footprint through practical, daily changes:

  • Arrange a Waste Audit: Our sustainability consultants conduct targeted commercial waste audits to help businesses identify plastic hotspots and optimize their source segregation.
  • Refine Workplace Waste Streams: Ensure your facility utilizes a clear, colour-coded bin system to prevent contamination and keep high-value plastics out of general waste.
  • Prioritise the Hierarchy of Waste: Eliminate single-use plastics at the procurement stage, replacing them with durable, reusable alternatives.
  • Enhance Corporate ESG Data: Use detailed waste tracking to enhance your corporate ESG reporting, proving your organization’s commitment to global conservation.
