A Christmas Message to our Customers, Suppliers, Staff and all our Friends from John S Glover, Chief Executive, Bywaters (Leyton) Ltd.

As 2021 draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on a challenging year for everybody, whilst looking to the future. 2021, has surely been a year like no other, the difficulties presented by the pandemic are still being felt across the world, and we all hope that 2022 will effectively see the slaying of Covid.

We have enjoyed being able to see so many of you face to face this year, picking up where we left off by driving sustainability and circular economy initiatives alongside our valued clients and friends.

Moving in to 2022, there are signs of hope and recovery, even as the omicron variant provides a reminder of the challenges we still face. Following COP 26, we have noticed a marked increase in organisations focusing on sustainable solutions and carbon reductions, a mantra that has been close to our hearts for years.

Last year saw us announce our commitment to reaching net zero by 2030, and I am proud to reveal that early 2022 will see the first of our fleet of fully electric RCV dustcarts, patrolling the streets of London. We are uniquely placed to “power these up” with our dedicated and owned 2.3 Megawatt output substation, together with high capacity charging points. At the current time we are futureproofed with 4.3 Megawatts output available from two full electrical substations. However, our maximum draw does not currently exceed 850 kW (0.850 Mw), which can be almost entirely offset in midsummer by our 4,000 solar panels.

We understand that many of you will be focused on reducing your Scope 3 emissions over the coming years, a task which we treat as a priority. We remain incredibly well connected with our two facilities in Bow and Leyton, just 10 minutes from Canary Wharf and 18 minutes from the City of London. With both locations leading directly to major routes in and out of the city, we ensure that your recycling and “waste” does not travel further than necessary before treatment.

In November 2021 and December 2021 Bywaters was re-audited and re-certificated to ISO 45001 (Health & Safety), ISO 14001 (Environment), ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 50001 (Energy Management). Investment in maintaining these standards has continued throughout the Covid period as safe, reliable and environmentally friendly operations are fundamental to the service we provide.

Finally, as things seem increasingly difficult this time of year, remember that from 21 December the days continuously get “longer and lighter”. We can all look forward to getting away from the cold, the wind and the wet, spending as much time as possible outside and enjoying the great weather when it comes and whilst we can.

2022 brings with it hope and opportunity. But for now, remember to spend time with your loved ones, be safe for yourself and be safe for them.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

John S Glover
