Bywaters cleaned up at this year’s Virgin London marathon in more ways than one – serving as the event’s cleanup crew, and also cheering on as our own Siân Glover ran in the race.

Bywaters’ Siân Glover’s Successful Marathon Run

The company’s Head of Social Enterprise completed the gruelling 26.2 mile course in record temperatures to raise over £2,000 for the RSPCA – a cause very close to her heart as an animal lover.

Siân was cheered on from the sidelines by friends and family including daughter Nola, 3, and her Bywaters colleagues. At Bywaters , we’re a family, and we always support any of our team in their endeavours. In light of this, we were delighted to act as Siân’s main sponsor for her London Marathon run.

Speaking about how she found running one of the world’s most famous long-distance races, Siân said:

“It was an amazing experience. I was really pleased with how it went and was very proud to be raising money for animals, which I am passionate about.”

Bywaters Ensures all Marathon Waste is Cleaned Up Sustainably

After the race on April 22 , Bywaters was responsible for the huge cleanup operation at the finish line. The company had a dustcart on site to empty the 60 bins along The Mall and Horseguards Parade, assisted by six Bywaters staff who volunteered to help out.

As anyone can imagine, cleaning London’s streets after the marathon is no easy task. Just one part of the process involved picking up thousands of drinks bottles and taking them back to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Bow for recycling, with over 18 tonnes of waste collected in total.

Nikki Brown, client relationship manger at Bywaters, said:

“The cleanup was a great success. All the contractors and staff worked really hard to ensure it was all cleared and restored to its original state, ready for the public and traffic.”

Our Commitment to Keeping London Clean

Bywaters is a company that keeps a ‘London for London’ approach at the heart of our philosophy. Cleaning up after the marathon was a great way to demonstrate this, and also further our efforts to reduce the environmental damage of single-use plastics by ensuring all plastic bottles from the event were recycled.

We’re immensely proud of Siân and all of the money she raised for the RSPCA to protect vulnerable animals (if you want to donate yourself, then you can do so here), and also of our team for all the work they put in to keep London’s streets clean.
