March 2011:
Bywaters, operators of the most advanced Materials Recovery Facility in London licensed to process 500,000 tonnes per annum, was recently invited by WRAP (The Waste Recycling Action Program) to participate in new technology trials.

Bywaters in conjunction with WRAP, Enval Ltd and Oakdean Holins Ltd were managing the recovery of laminated plastic food packaging materials from co-mingled waste streams.

Laminated plastics present process issues when mixed with everyday recyclables as feed stock for MRFs.

Enval's technology extracts commercially usable aluminium, oil and gas from laminated packaging waste, such as drink cartons (e.g. Tetra Pak), food pouches, and toothpaste tubes, allowing the resource to be completely recycled in an economically viable way.

The test was carried out to establish the feasibility of collecting laminated plastics from a co-mingled recyclable stream. Bywaters operatives thought the initial findings were positive and another step towards improving resource management techniques.

David Rumble, Strategic Development at Bywaters stated "our commitment to zero direct to landfill will only be achieved through continual exploration of new technologies and looking at innovative methods at recycling everything".

The conclusive trial results will be published on the WRAP website. For more about Enval, you can visit www.enval.com.
