17th March 2010:
Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, visited Bywaters’ MRF to launch a consultation on how and whether to restrict the landfilling of certain wastes that can be recycled or recovered.

The joint Defra and Welsh Assembly Government publication ‘Consultation on the Introduction of Restrictions on the Landfilling of Certain Wastes’ considers the case for landfill restrictions on the following types of waste: paper and card; food; textiles; metals; wood; garden waste; glass; plastics; and electrical and electronic equipment.

Mr Benn visited the Bywaters’ MRF to see how waste can be kept out of landfill. He was accompanied by John S Glover, Managing Director of Bywaters.

Hilary saw how the MRF operates and maximises recovery rates. The technology used enables a different material to be recovered at every point of the process, generating 15 different material streams for recycling. Mr Benn was available for interviews at the MRF.

Bywaters Materials Recovery Facility provides recycling and waste management services to businesses and organisations across London and the South East. The site at Bow has the capacity to handle 125,000 tonnes per annum.
