16th December 2008:

Bywaters and ELBP host a guide to writing an environmental policy workshop

Bywaters and East London Business Place have been working together to support local businesses. The workshop was designed to help small and medium businesses write and implement an environmental policy, offering a competitive advantage when tendering for contracts.

The workshop, followed by a tour of the largest undercover dry recyclables Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in London, was held at Bywaters head office in Bow, east London.

Kirsteen Harrison, Sustainability Adviser at Bywaters, provided an interactive platform where 16 local SME businesses learnt about an environmental policy, and obtained ideas on how to develop and implement one. Kirsteen's main areas of expertise are in corporate social responsibility, climate change policy, environmental business support and project management. The workshop gave the companies the opportunity to access this expertise to create their policy, or refine a policy that may need further development.

The workshop was "designed to empower people, give them the information and confidence to go away and develop and implement their own environmental policy", says Kirsteen. "Feedback from the event was positive with guests stating that they found the workshop useful and feel able to roll out an environmental policy to take their business to the next level". The success of the workshop has highlighted businesses thirst for knowledge within the environmental sector. Bywaters and ELBP are discussing the possibility of working together on additional services of benefit to the local community.

Gay Harrington Director of ELBP says "We are delighted to be partnering with Bywaters to offer this type of event to the local business community as it is important for small and medium size enterprises to have these policies in place to ensure they are in a more competitive position when tendering for contract opportunities. ELBP offers an extensive free programme of events where businesses can develop a whole range of skills and access business support making them more attractive to buyers."

Bywaters and ELBP are also working together to implement Bywaters unique two-bin 'Bycycler system' at ELBP's offices.
