26th June 2008:
Bywaters' new Materials Recovery Facility in Bow was host to a large group of BIFM members last week.

The event followed Bywaters' official launch on World Environment Day with guest speaker Mayor of London Boris Johnson. This time Lynda Tilbury, Chair of BIFM London Region, took to the stage to welcome guests.

Bywaters invested £7million installing the largest undercover dry recyclables MRF in London, operational from March this year. The MRF works seamlessly with the unique two-bin 'Bycycler' recycling system that Bywaters is rolling out to businesses and organisations across London.

With an input capacity of up to 250,000 tonnes of dry recyclables per year, it is the largest undercover dry recyclables MRF in the capital and is just a few miles from Canary Wharf and the City.

Owned and run by family firm Bywaters, the MRF is part of a major £30million relocation project to a 9.2 acre site in Bow, east London. The building at Lea Riverside covers more than 187,000 square feet and is able to operate in all weather conditions, with materials remaining dry as well as secure.

After their site visit, guests voiced their support for the new facility.

Bashir Hassan, Building Services, The Bank of New York Mellon said: "It's very interesting, and it's good to see less waste going to landfill. We need more of these MRFs."

Tom Crame, Facilities Manager at charity Amnesty International was quick to see the new MRF's benefits. "This has the potential to increase recycling and reuse. It's an easy way for companies to recycle," he said.

And Bernadetta Ostaszewska, Facilities Manager at M J Mapp added: "It's a very modern facility and a real eye opener on the recycling industry as a whole. I enjoyed the site visit and tour, and got a better understanding of the recycling process."

So much enthusiasm was shown during the event that Bywaters are looking into another similar event later in the year. If you are interested in visiting the site please email info@bywaters.co.uk.
