29th November 2004:
Bywaters Recycling and Waste Management were pleased to work with the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre and London Remade to provide a sustainable recycling and waste management solution for the Jigsaw conference this year.

The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre (QEIICC) is a prestigious purpose-built conference centre in the heart of Westminster. Bywaters has been working with the QEII Conference Centre for over 10 years providing recycling and waste management services. For the conference, we provided our new 'Bycycler' recycling containers. The containers, used for the recycling of mixed paper, white paper and cans at the event, are 100 per cent recyclable and made from approximately 20 per cent recycled plastic.

They were branded by both the QEII CC and Bywaters and will be kept by the Centre for future use.

Jigsaw 2004 was organised by London Remade - an innovative recycling programme aimed at increasing markets for recycled products (www.londonremade.com). It is principally funded by the London Development Agency to deliver green procurement and business support programmes. The conference focused on key issues facing the recycling supply chain. It attracted procurement professionals, environmental managers, designers, manufacturers and suppliers of recycled products, as well as investors, regeneration and recycling market development specialists.

Some 186 delegates attended from companies such as Anglo American plc, Barclays Bank, DTI, Ford Motor Company, HM Treasury, Legal and General and the Metropolitan Police Service. The keynote speakers focused on:

  • Government policy to drive good environmental practice
  • The role of the recycling sector in economic development
  • Initiatives to promote design and product development
  • The increase in usage of recycled products
  • The funding for the recycling sector

The QEII CC holds over 400 events each year and, on average, recycles the following each month: 240 kg of white paper; 400 kg of mixed paper; 2,200 kg of cardboard; 8000 kg of glass and 15 kg of aluminium cans. This equates to 130,260 kg of the above wastes diverted from landfill per annum. The QEII CC also recycles fluorescent tubes, wooden pallets and other recyclable materials as and when they are generated, which are collected by Bywaters.
