1st December 2004:
Bywaters' senior management took the decision at the beginning of 2003 that the most effective way forward for the company would be to implement a formally certified environmental management system (EMS), and that ISO 14001 would be the system we would adopt.
We are now pleased to announce that the EMS in place at our Lea Interchange site has been certified as being up to the standards required for ISO 14001.
The certification means that the management system we use to control our environmental impacts at Lea Interchange has been reviewed in detail by a UKAS-accredited third party (Lloyds Register Quality Assurance) and that they are satisfied the way we operate is up to the strict standards of ISO 14001. It was the planned course of action that each of Bywaters' four operational sites be considered individually.
For a number of reasons, the site selected as the "pioneer" site was Lea Interchange housing both the vehicle maintenance workshop and the centralised company accounts section. Work on the implementation of an EMS commenced at the beginning of 2003, and, after a good deal of work from all staff involved, we hit our first target on schedule. The work now carries on at our Business Development and Equipment Engineering sites: Marshgate 1 and Marshgate 2 in Stratford.
The intention is to extend the existing system to include these two sites and, once that has been done and the extended version of the EMS has been certified to ISO 14001, to bring Gateway Road into the overall EMS.
