The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 set a portable-battery recycling target of 35% in 2014, reaching 45% by 2016. It also prohibits industrial and automotive batteries from being sent to landfill or incineration.
If your business has a UK presence and places batteries onto the UK market for the first time then you are a producer. This includes batteries in appliances and vehicles.
Your specific obligations will vary depending on the type and amount of batteries you produce.
If you are a producer of portable batteries you will need to register, either with the Environment Agency (small producers <1 tonne) or with a producer Compliance Scheme (large producers over >1 tonne) who will act on your behalf.
If you produce industrial or automotive batteries you must also register with the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS)
