Bywaters ‘Empower’ London’s Energy Champions

Last week Bywaters had the pleasure of hosting an Inspire Day for 12 Energy Champions from the Bromley by Bow Centre’s Empower Programme. The action packed half-day event centred on the theme of ‘Energy and the Environment’ and included; educational talks, a recycling workshop, paneldiscussions, and closed with a networking lunch.

The Empower programme run by Bywaters charity partner - the Bromley by Bow Centre, aims to tackle fuel poverty within the London borough of Tower Hamlets. By working with resident volunteers who are seeking employment, the programme trains each participant to become an Energy Champion and receive an OCN Level 1 Qualification in Fuel Poverty and Energy Costs. These Energy Champions will then work with local housing providers and community organisations, to come up with coproduction solutions which help households save money on their energy costs.

As a local business which has operated within the environmental sector for over 60 years, and a partner of the Bromley by Bow Centre. Bywaters Inspire Day provided a vital opportunity for each trainee to broaden their knowledge of environmental issues currently faced within the local borough.

With some of the Energy Champions looking to pursue a new career challenge, the session which included a panel discussion on alternative routes to work, also provided invaluable insights into working within the waste and resource management sector.

Empower Programme’s Employment Advisor - Juliana Ajibade, commented “I’d like to say a big thank you for holding such a great Inspire day.  We all now feel well educated on the very impressive and sustainable recycling systems.  The champions also found it valuable to hear from your staffing team and the various routes into employment within Bywaters.”
